Taxi driver charged with involvement in carjacking

Months after two men were charged with stealing a car, a taxi driver made an appearance before the city courts charged as a co-conspirator in the carjacking.

Alton Gouling, 29, of 196 Diamond New Housing Scheme was brought before Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday and was accused of stealing a Mazda Axela car on June 11 of this year. According to the charge, the vehicle was the property of Ivery Allicock and valued at $2.7M.

Gouling pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the police, on the date in question at about 1 am, Allicock parked his car in front of his John Street, Campbellville home before retiring to bed. However, upon waking the next morning, Allicock found his car missing. He immediately made a report and police

subsequently went to Buxton, East Coast Demerara after receiving information. There, the officers managed to recover

the car.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail and cited the prevalence, nature, and gravity of the offence as his reasons. He went on to state that Gouling was a possible flight risk, since he had managed to evade the law for just over four months.

Magistrate McLennan upheld Jones’ objections and remanded Gouling to prison until November 14, when the case will be called for report.

In June, Kirtland Scott, a taxi driver, and Mortimer Chan, a security guard, appeared before the Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on separate occasions to answer charges over the carjacking. Both men had been remanded to prison.
