Larceny accused gets bail after recanting guilty plea

A man accused of stealing from his employer was yesterday placed on bail after he recanted a guilty plea following needed legal advice.

Rayon David made his second appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday on a charge of simple larceny, stemming from the allegation that he stole $130,000 from his former employer.

It is alleged on November 3 at Mahdia, David, 20, stole the money, which belonged to Garfield Sam.

The unrepresented David entered a plea of guilty when he appeared on Thursday at the court. However, after the court figured that David appeared to be confused and no relative was present, the matter was adjourned to yesterday. During this period David also told the court he wanted to make contact with his aunt.

However, when David reappeared yesterday he was represented by attorney Peter Hugh, who was asked to preside on his behalf based on his situation. Thereafter, David was made aware of the charge and its consequence and later entered a plea of not guilty. The contact information and name of his aunt were taken so that contact can be made with her. When the court questioned David what he did with the money, he replied he took it and bought clothes and bag. However, $72,000 was recollected of the total amount that was stolen.

Prosecutor Michael Grant had no objections to bail and David was granted $75,000 bail. The matter was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for January 12, 2015.
