Goldsmith remanded on ganja trafficking charge

A goldsmith was on Monday remanded to prison after he denied the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Roger Sammy, 33, of 84 Fourth Avenue, Bartica denied that he had 123 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking on December 13 at the Itaballi Police Outpost.

Attorney Latchmie Rahamat told city magistrate Ann McLennan that based on information received from her client, she believed that circumstances existed for bail to be granted. Rahamat said that at the time of the discovery Sammy was an occupant of a truck along with five other persons. Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail. Jones said there is an outpost at Itaballi, where persons are checked, and Sammy and the others disembarked the trucked and a search was conducted and the narcotics were found in a black plastic bag.

After bail was refused, the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for January 8.
