The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating reports of a man being beaten at the Aurora Police Station on Sunday evening by an officer who was allegedly drunk.
The investigation, ordered by acting Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud, was prompted by a letter published in yesterday’s edition of Stabroek News, under the heading “Beaten at police station,” in which the writer, Latchman Narine Bhodnarine, said he had been the victim of police brutality at the hands of one of the station’s ranks.
In his letter, Bhodnarine stated that he had been “severely beaten” to the extent of suffering a fractured rib.
According to the man, he had gone to the station to make a report of a domestic incident.
However, he wrote, he was manhandled by an officer before he could relate his report as well as cursed and punched about the face and body by the very officer.
He added that the beating continued until he was placed in the lock-ups and incarcerated for the duration of the night.
The following day, his letter said, he was released on self-bail and had gone to the Suddie Hospital after suffering from immense pain.
An X-ray revealed that he had attained a fractured rib.
According to a GPF press release issued yesterday, the organisation is in receipt of Bhodnarine’s report along with his statement and medical report and Persaud instructed the Office of Professional Responsibility to conduct investigations into the allegations made.
