Wounding accused released on bail after lawyer says victim injured himself

A man accused of wounding another man was granted $45,000 bail yesterday after his lawyer argued that the complainant is a known menace in Plaisance and injured himself while jumping a fence.

Frankie Spelling, 49, of 79 Prince William Street, found himself at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court accused of breaking Michael Williams’ hand at Plaisance on December 29. Spelling was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

When Williams came to court his left hand was in a cast. But James Bond, Spelling’s lawyer, told the court that Williams broke his hand because he was jumping a fence.

Bond said that fence hopping is hobby for Williams and he is known as a menace in Plaisance, where residents call him ‘Bin Laden.’

Bond asked Magistrate Zamilla Ally to grant reasonable bail for his client.

After no objections by Prosecutor John Singh, bail was set at $45,000. The case will be called again on February 20.
