Friends remanded over Guyhoc robbery

Two friends were yesterday remanded to prison after they appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with robbing another of a quantity of valuables and cash.

It is alleged on January 2 at Guyhoc Gardens, being in the company of another, Natasha Campbell, 21 and Neville Campbell, 25, robbed Martin Anthony of a quantity of cash and valuables amounting to a total value of $157, 500.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charge read to them by at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.

Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to bail based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence and the fact that the victims are well known to the virtual complainant. Mangru added if bail is granted it is likely that they may tamper with the prosecution evidence.

Mangru told the court that on the day in question Anthony was on his way home from work when he was attacked by three males and a female, two of whom were known to him. The attackers choked Anthony causing him to fall on the ground and they relieved him of his belongings along with cash.

While he was on the ground he managed to get a glimpse of two of the persons. Natasha and Neville Campbell were taken to the police station, where they were positively identified by Anthony and later arrested and charged.

Attorney Jed Vasconcellos applied for reasonable bail to be granted. He said from the information he received from his clients there was no ID parade conducted and the victims were not positively identified by Anthony but by another relative.

After court submissions, the magistrates remanded both the defendants. They are expected to make their next court appearance on January 12 before Magis-trate Judy Latchman.
