We have turned a blind eye to decency and dignity

Dear Editor,

The alleged plan of expulsion or transfer of teacher Mr John Adams from the village of Aishalton, Region 9 should be a major concern for every right-thinking Guyanese.

Being a product of Amerindian ethnicity on my late mother’s side, I cannot and will never accept any mistreatment of anyone whether indigenous or not. No village captain or Toshao has birthright over any village or land, and while we respect the rights of our indigenous brothers and sisters to land ownership it must not be interpreted as a God-given right to trample on others’ constitutional rights.

Natural justice must be allowed to take its course and the relevant authorities must do their job without fear or ill will.

Secondly, every citizen of this country is entitled to freedom of speech. However, this must be done with decency, civility and respect, so what Mr Adams has done is totally unacceptable and unpatriotic. Our President is our leader and head of state and must be shown respect at all times. Whether we agree or disagree with his point of view he remains our president and we must show him respect.

What we have witnessed in our country today is unprecedented; citizens have become lawless and disrespectful, and all the moral values that our ancestors accepted have diminished, and our land is fast deteriorating because we have turned a blind eye to decency and dignity.

A call is made to my fellow brothers and sisters of Guyana, to please let us live in love and harmony and stop the bitterness and political division. Let us unite to build this great land of ours which our ancestors fought long and hard for through their sweat and blood, so that we can enjoy a better life today.

A call is made to our political leaders to stop the politicking and work together in the interest of all our people.

Yours faithfully,

Andre Fortune
