Water processors must be licensed

The Government Analyst-Food and Drug Department is calling on water processing factories to conform to all requirements as regards the sale and distribution of treated water in five-gallon bottles.

According to a press release from the department, manufacturers and distributors must have a valid licence, which is an indicator of compliance of good manufacturing practice. The release also mentioned that bottles used must be properly cleaned, sanitizing, labelled and sealed prior to sale and or distribution.

Additionally, the release stated that it was reported to the department that some persons are in the practice of offering for sale and distribution water that was not properly processed and therefore of questionable quality.

The release also called on all manufacturers and distributors to have trained personnel at their facility.

The department further called on customers to ensure that the treated water they purchase is properly labelled and sealed. Customers are asked to report any company that fails to comply with the department’s minimal requirements as it relates to the sale of treated water to the general public. “Customers making purchases should demand to see a valid licence issued by the Food and Drug Department,” the release added.

All premises involved in the processing, distribution and sale of drinking water particularly in five-gallon bottles must be in possession of a valid licence.

Guy-American Purified Water, First Choice Purified Water, Pure Aqua Purified Water, Demerara Distillers Limited, Banks DIH Limited, Water Point, Irish Spring Purified Water, Kaieteur Springs, Smart Water and Best Water are the factories listed that were licensed last year.
