I read with great sadness the letter in yesterday’s edition of the Stabroek News, titled ‘Anyone present at the Lusignan’s Night of Remembrance would disagree with SN editorial,’ written by Bishop Juan A Edghill, MP, Minister within the Ministry of Finance.
I am saddened because I happened to be the person who piloted and ushered Juan Edghill’s entry into the political arena. Recall that with others we led the protest against the PPP new government’s attempt post 1992 to marginalize Mashramani and the Republic celebrations. The new PPP government organized a massive party excursion set to affect Mashramani. The vigour of our protest which included Bishop Edghill soon brought the PPP leadership to their senses.
My only criticism of the Stabroek News editorial even though it was quality journalism, is that it perhaps was rather mild in criticizing Bishop Juan Edghill. For that, the good Bishop should be thankful.
This gentleman at a PPP public meeting committed blasphemy, when he asseverated that if Jesus Christ came to Guyana he would vote for the PPP. This Bishop when asked by me, when he would urge the religious community to speak out against Bharrat Jagdeo’s fake marriage, clearly an illegal and immoral act, and worse, a bad example to young people everywhere, said that it was a private matter.
When the whole country was concerned about the many examples where contractors had either failed to complete the job properly, or did sloppy work inconsistent with the large amount they received from this government, and work collapsed or deteriorated within a few months, there was no action by the good Bishop.
