The issuing of US visas is governed by a policy which is unlikely to change

Dear Editor,

With few exceptions, non-immigrant visa applications are evaluated under Section 214(b) of the United States Immigration and Nationality Act, which states, in part, that every applicant for a nonimmigrant visa “…shall be presumed to be an immigrant until (s)he establishes to the satisfaction of the consular officer, at the time of application for a visa… that (s)he is entitled to nonimmigrant status…” This statutory presumption of immigration may be overcome by demonstrating sufficiently strong familial, social, professional and economic ties to a country outside the United States that would compel return after a temporary stay in the United States.

So what really is Jagdeo saying when he warned that US visas will be hard to get if the APNU+AFC is elected to office?

Yes, visas may be harder for the PPP to get, but until and unless the criteria change, what stands today as US policy will stand tomorrow. It matters not who is in power. Those who are granted visas today will continue to be granted visas tomorrow because of their strong family, social, professional and economic ties to Guyana. There is no common sense in this Jagdeo message.

The more this person opens his mouth, the more it reveals an agenda to drive fear into the minds of the East Indians of Guyana using cheap political sound bytes.

Any rational thinker will know that what was said at the PPP Kitty rally is nothing but a blatant untruth. Mr Jagdeo clearly does not know what he is talking about, or he is just being politically mischievous to the detriment of Guyana.

Yours faithfully,

Sase Singh
