Hunger leads homeless man to jail

One homeless man’s quest for food has landed him in prison for the next two years.

The man, whose name was only given as “Chris,” was sentenced in the city on Wednesday after he admitted to stealing a bicycle.

The man entered the court of magistrate Fabayo Azore and began verbally abusing persons sitting in the courtroom. “Don’t look at me too strong, I does kill. See whay I deh? In the box,” the man belted out at one individual.

Seeing the ruckus that the man was causing in her courtroom, Magistrate Azore made it clear that she wasn’t going to have any of it before ordering officers to take ‘Chris’ back downstairs to calm down.

When he was later summoned to answer the charge, the man appeared to be calm.

However, the reading of the charge had to be paused several times as “Chris” had to repeatedly be told to pull up his sagging pants so as to avoid further indecent exposure of himself. He was clad in an old t-shirt and pants which were two times his size.

When the charge was finally read, the court heard that on April 7, at Thomas Street, Kitty, ‘Chris’ stole a bicycle, valued at $20,000, from Lester Caesar.

When asked for his plea, the previously irate man broke down in tears, while relating to the magistrate that he was hungry.

He said, “I was looking for food when I find de bicycle. I went there and see a bicycle without a lock on it in a wood house and I snatch it.” He further stated, “I start drive the bike when another man snatched it from me.”

However, the rambling continued as a teary eyed ‘Chris” broke down even further, while continuously begging the magistrate for food.

After listening to his pleas, Magistrate Azore eventually told the man that he would get food in prison since she was sentencing him to 24 months in jail for the crime.

As he was being escorted out of the courtroom, he was heard saying, “Blessing on you, thank you,” to Magistrate Azore.
