Accused ganja farmers get $500,000 bail

Two farmers, accused of cultivating marijuana, were on Tuesday granted $500,000 bail each after declaring their innocence.

Dexter Wallerson and Jason Narine pleaded not guilty when they first appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on April 22, 2015. Wallerson and Narine were remanded and reappeared on Tuesday, when they maintained their not guilty pleas.

Wallerson and Narine are accused of cultivating marijuana at their farm at Kuru Kuru, where police say they found 20,000 seven-foot tall marijuana plants and 9,000 plants growing in nurseries. The two men were arrested, at which point police say they asked for a chance.

Wallerson and Narine’s lawyer argued for reasonable bail, while explaining that it was practically impossible for the two men to have handled the 29,000 plants as alleged.

After careful consideration, Magistrate Leron Daly placed the two men on $500,000 bail each. Their next court date is May 14, 2015.
