Accused Grove ganja farmers get bail

Marcia Andrews and Mark Williams, the two Grove residents who were charged separately on Monday with cultivating ganja, were yesterday each granted their release on $100,000 bail.

Andrews, 39, and Williams, 46, had been charged after the discovery of four marijuana plants at a Grove, East Bank Demerara yard on February 18th.

They both pleaded not guilty.

When they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday, their attorney argued that they should be granted bail due to the fact that the area in which the plants were found is open and accessible to persons other than those residing at the property where Andrews and Williams live. The attorney noted that the area where the police allegedly found the marijuana was some 20 ft away from the building.

It was also highlighted that apart from the defendants, who share a relationship, there are at least four other persons who would have had access to the area.

Nevertheless, Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence. The defendants were, however, subsequently granted bail by Chief Magistrate McLennan, who set March 7th as the date for the next hearing.
