Grove residents charged with growing ganja

The discovery of four marijuana plants at a Grove, East Bank Demerara house has led to two of the residents being charged in a city court with cultivating a prohibited plant.

Marcia Andrews and Mark Williams, who were yesterday charged separately with cultivating a prohibited plant, both pleaded not guilty.

According to the charge, the discovery was made on February 18, at Grove, East Bank Demerara.

The court heard that Andrews, 39, and Williams, 46, both reside at the same premises, 580 Kaneville, Grove, along with several other tenants.

Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick objected to bail on the grounds of the nature of the crime committed. He stated that on the day in question, at around 4.30pm, police officers went in search of narcotics at the premises. Upon completion of their search of the home, officers proceeded into the backyard, where they found four cannabis plants. He added that given the fact that the defendants were the only individuals on the premises at the time of the search, they were told of the offence they had committed and were subsequently arrested.

Magistrate Judy Latchman denied bail to the accused and adjourned the matter to February 26.
