Suspects in mining camp invasion turn themselves in

The men who allegedly invaded the Figueira Mining Company and fired shots causing millions of dollars in loss and leaving an excavator operator injured about one week ago, yesterday turned themselves in at Mahdia Police Station and were released on their own recognizance.

Speaking with Stabroek News yesterday, Alisha Figueira, proprietor of the mining company located at Konawaruk, Region 8 expressed her dissatisfaction at the action taken by the police following the men turning themselves in. Figueira said since the incident she, her workers and entire family fear for their lives and are also still traumatized.

This newspaper understands that the five men, showed up at the Mahdia Police Station yesterday afternoon and were released on their own recognizance two hours after.

However, Figueira informed Stabroek News also that the men gave written statements and handed over two of the five guns that were used to carry out the shooting.

The attack, which the Figueiras believe stems from an ongoing land dispute, saw a worker being shot and millions in damage being done at the camp. The wounded worker, Ray Murray, 44, of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, had told Stabroek News that he and others were working when a group of armed men invaded the camp at around 1 pm last Sunday.

The men, who arrived in a land cruiser, shot at fuel tanks and engines. Murray was shot to the back of his head with pellets.

The land dispute matter is before the High Court and an injunction has been filed. However, according to Figueira the injunction was breached and the court date is tomorrow.
