New government must honour the promises made

Dear Editor,

I wish to extend congratulations to Mr David Arthur Granger, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana; Mr Moses Veerasammy Nagamootoo, Prime Minister; and the APNU+AFC coalition for achieving victory at the 2015 National and Regional Elections.

As the new Cabinet is formed and ministers take their respective places within the ministries of government from Monday, May 18, I appeal to our new President and government to honour the promises made to the people of Guyana during the lengthy campaign period, and to create an avenue for inclusive governance encompassing persons and institutions with common interests, thoughts and resources for the socio-economic development of our nation as we proceed into a technologically advanced future.

Additionally, I recall in 1992 when the PPP/C ministers took office there was little to hand over and begin working with. Today, as Guyana has developed, there are tons of records, fixtures and fittings, land and buildings, motor vehicles and contracted projects which are works-in-progress.

In this regard, there must be a transitional period for the smooth handing-over process, and accountability for transparency and continuity of development.

Yours faithfully,
Hana Mohamed
