Dear Editor,
With the announcement of the final preliminary results for the May 11, 2015, General and Regional Elections, which shows the opposition coalition APNU+AFC having the majority of votes, all Guyanese have won.
This victory means that we as Guyanese were able to put aside our differences and unite to fight rampant corruption, and the inequity and nepotism which existed under the PPP/C government.
These elections were held at a period when many Guyanese would have lost trust and confidence in the government to act in their best interest, one where revelations about ‘secret deals’ and costly projects were the order of the day. This angered many persons, including myself to the point where voting did not become option, but a must.
On May 11, the lines were long and the talk was “vote them out” and “vote like a boss.” There were many first time and elderly voters, anxiously awaiting their turn to cast their ballot. On the eve of Election Day, persons were again at the polling stations, this time to get a glimpse of the Statement of Poll, which reflected the votes each party would receive.
With the imminent victory for the coalition, it is expected that the new government will be one that is transparent in its operations and accountable to the Guyanese people. It is also expected that all ‘shady’ projects undertaken by the past PPP/C government will be reviewed, reworked or aborted, where applicable, so as to benefit all Guyanese and not just a few selected friends and family.
The tide has turned, and now we have a great opportunity to live up to our motto of “one people, one nation and one destiny.”
I congratulate our new President and Prime Minister and urge them not to lose focus on the task at hand, and to always put the Guyanese citizens first in every decision they make.
