Construction worker remanded over haversack theft

A construction worker was remanded to prison yesterday after being nabbed by citizens for allegedly snatching a schoolchild’s haversack.

The 21-year-old man who resides at 28 East Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.

According to the prosecution, on May 25, 2015, at East Street, North Cummingsburg, Omar Stevens snatched a haversack from Jermaine Pilgrim, which contained a tablet worth $15,000. Stevens tried to escape after Pilgrim alerted the public and was subdued and taken to the police station. An investigation was carried out and he was arrested and charged.

Stevens was denied bail and remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. His next court date is June 15, 2015.
