Youths charged with robbing fellow bus passengers at stop

Two youths were yesterday remanded to prison after they were charged with robbing two women of cash and valuables as they disembarked the bus in which they were all passengers.

Jermain Daley, 22, of 34, Cooper Street, Albouystown and Akeem Charles, 20, of 178 West Ruimveldt, both denied the robbery charge read against them in a city court. Although shackled, Charles attempted to flee after the hearing but was apprehended by police.

The men are accused of robbing Bibi Razia of $40,000 in cash and valuables, and Bibi Khan of an $80,000 gold chain on May 25th, 2015, at the Agricola Public Road.

Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that the two accused joined a Route 42 mini bus en route to Georgetown and the men requested to stop in the vicinity of the Flower Mill, on the Agricola Public Road.

The court heard that after a report was made, the driver of the minibus went back to Agricola, where he observed the two accused riding in the area. The driver then pointed out the men to a police patrol, which was in close proximity and they were arrested.

Some $16,500 was recovered on Daley, while $13,500 was recovered on Charles, said Gonsalves, who added that the men were later positively identified by the victims.

Despite Gonsalves’ objections, Daley begged the Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to grant him bail. “I beg you meh worship, please, I have a son,” he pleaded, while informing the magistrate that he was innocent of the crime and the officers who arrested him did so under the influence of alcohol. Bail was, however, refused and the men were remanded to prison until June 12th.

Afterward, as the men made their way towards the holding facility at the court, Charles charged out and sped away onto the road in the vicinity of Brickdam and Avenue of the Republic. The shackled man was quickly apprehended by the police.
