Goed Intent mason dies after beating

A 47-year-old labourer of Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara who sustained a severe blow to his head on Friday afternoon succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) early yesterday morning.

The suspect immediately fled the scene after the incident but was arrested the following day and taken into custody.

Reports are that Wesley Douglas was drinking at a rum shop at Parfait Harmonie around 4 pm when an argument ensued between him and a cousin with whom he had an old grievance. According to police sources, the suspect came out of the shop and Douglas followed him and the argument continued. Douglas reportedly punched the suspect who in turn dealt him a blow to his head and left arm. Relatives said the attacker used a “wood to lash him.” Douglas immediately collapsed to the ground and was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

His wife, Yunette told this newspaper that she received a call after 5 pm on Friday that someone had hit him and that he was in the hospital. When she got there he was crying out for severe pain in his head and was delirious. He was then transferred to the GPHC. On Saturday morning when she and other family members returned to the hospital he was unconscious and his face was swollen and his eyes were black. When they left in the evening his condition remained the same. Around 6:45 am yesterday they were preparing to go to the hospital when they received a call that he had died.

His uncle Osmond Douglas who has a rum shop told Stabroek News that the two of them did mason work in Parfait Harmonie Scheme and they finished around 1:30 pm. He said Douglas went to his shop first and they had a drink before he went to the other rum shop nearby.

He leaves to mourn his wife and his four children; Keron, 22, Olivia, 21, Tishana, 19 and 10-year-old Runako.
