Taxi driver gets bail after denying fraud charge

A taxi driver was yesterday placed on $75,000 bail after he denied misusing money given to him to buy a car engine.

Claude Peters, 41, pleaded not guilty when Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge of fraudulent conversion to him yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 2.

It is alleged that between June 1st and June 3rd, at Georgetown, being solely entrusted with $100,000, in order to purchase a car engine for PNN 4188, Peters converted the money to his own use and benefit.

His attorney, Paul Fung-A-Fat, during an application for bail, told the court that Peters has never been in trouble with the law before.

According to Fung-A-Fat, no receipts were signed for the transaction but a friend of the victim is saying that the money was handed over to Peters in his presence.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones had no objections to bail, which was granted. The matter is adjourned to July 27th.
