Bermuda scrape home despite Guyana-born Phill’s 6-46

ST DAVID’S, Bermuda, CMC — Chare Smith and Charles Trott took five wickets apiece as Bermuda kept alive their slim hopes of reaching next year’s Under-19 World Cup finals by beating the United States by one wicket in a low-scoring match on day four of the ICC Americas qualifying tournament here yesterday.

Smith (five for 27 from nine overs) and Trott (five for 30 from 10) combined to bundle out the US for 109 in 30 overs before the hosts scraped home in 22.2 overs — despite Guyana-born seamer Keifer Phill’s six-wicket haul — to register their first win of the three-team, week-long tournament.

Canada, who have won both of their matches so far, are favourites to win an automatic spot in next year’s finals in Bangladesh, while Bermuda and the US battle it out for second place to earn a place in another qualifier later in the year at a venue yet to be announced.
