Fisherman charged in SOL break in, granted bail

Two fishermen, who police say were involved in a break-and-enter at a warehouse where they stole 135 containers of engine oil worth $2,217,680 were yesterday granted bail by a city magistrate after both pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Michael Gomes, 34, and Devon Allicock, 22, were charged with breaking and entering a Sol Guyana Inc warehouse and stealing 135 containers of Shell Rimula R2 40 on July 17.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones said that police officers received information about the incident and went to the Agricola location where they were confronted by four armed men. Gunshots were exchanged and two of the men escaped in a boat which was in a nearby river.

The prosecution did not object to bail.

Both men were represented by Attorney Euclin Gomes.

The attorney indicated that Michael Gomes of Lot 31 James Street, Albouystown, was shot in his upper leg and right arm by police officers.

He noted that he was surprised that his client was not admitted to the hospital due to the severity of his injuries. He also stated that Gomes is in a common-law relationship and is a father of four.

Attorney Gomes then told the court that Allicock, of Lot 33 James Street, Albouystown, is also involved in a common-law relationship.

The attorney emphasized that both of his clients had no previous charges or convictions and that they pose no risk of flight.

Each defendant was granted $200,000 bail by Magistrate Ann McLennan. The case was adjourned until July 29.
