Ambrose outsprints Hinds, John to take title

Alonzo Ambrose’s sprinting prowess was on full display yesterday at the National Park as he sped past his rivals to take the Seven Seas cycling winner’s trophy.

The Team Alanis standout outsprinted his breakaway mates Orville Hinds (Team Gillette Evolution) and Jamal John (Team Coco’s) in an exciting finish to the showpiece event of the 12th annual Seven Seas 11-race programme.

Ambrose, who has been the most consistent wheelsman this season, got his first signature win of 2015 in the 35-lap event in a brisk one hour, 18 minutes and 49 seconds. Besides the winner’s trophy, the former junior national rider also took home two of the eight sprint prizes.

Hinds snared four prizes in a stellar display of riding which was just short of a victory.

Akeem Wilkinson (Team Gillette Evolution), and Ambrose’s club mates, Paul Choo-We-Nam and Christopher Griffith rounded out the top six positions.

The top three riders broke away from the peloton in the third lap and never relinquished their lead despite valiant efforts by the peloton. The trio rode as a team to preserve their lead which ballooned with every powerful turn of their pedals.

As expected, teamwork was thrown out the window about 150 metres from the finish.

John rolled up the sprint, Hinds followed and this caused a domino effect as Ambrose also rose from his saddle.

John still had a slim lead with about 100 metres to go but Ambrose seemed to find another gear and powered through for the win as John faded to third.
