Lady Jags face Cuba in crucial match today

With a berth in the next round on the line, the Lady Jaguars will face-off with Cuba today in their final Group 4 fixture in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Olympic qualifiers at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic.

Fresh off their 8-0 drubbing of St. Kitts and Nevis in the opening fixture, Guyana will oppose the Cubans in what will be the third matchup between the two sides at any level. In terms of wins, the two sides possess one victory each while Guyana leads the goals scored statistic with three conversions.

Cuba on the other hand, has netted twice in the rivalry. In terms of FIFA ranking, Cuba leads by a considerable margin with a 92nd rating compared to Guyana’s 142nd ranking.

The Lady Jaguars rose to prominence in 2010 after becoming the first national team from Guyana to feature in a CONCACAF tourney which was the Gold Cup held in Mexico.

Unlike the u-23 age limit of the Olympic male version, the women’s event does not have such a stipulation. The top three teams from the CFU qualifiers will progress to the CONCACAF Women’s Summer Olympic Tournament in 2016.
