Porter gets two years for robbing UG student

A John Fernandes porter was yesterday remanded to two years in jail after he admitted to robbing a University of Guyana (UG) student.

Shawn France, of 33 Old Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, pleaded guilty to robbing Arudranath Parsnath of a Samsung Galaxy cellphone, valued $250,000, at Pike Street, Sophia.

City magistrate Ann McLennan heard that on September 9th, Parsnath was walking home from the Turkeyen campus and exited through Sophia. France, who was riding a bicycle, approached and instructed the young man to hand over his valuables. Parsnath handed the man his cellphone. After France rode away an alarm was raised and the man was soon after apprehended by public-spirited citizens, who took him to the nearby police outpost.
