Guard accused of being burglar

A security guard was placed on bail yesterday after he denied breaking into a house and stealing over $800,000 in items.

Gregor Watson, 32, pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

Watson was accused of breaking and entering Deslyn Morris’ home at Farm, East Bank Demerara, on August 20, 2015 and stealing a quantity of electronics and other items that amounted to $825,000 in total value.

According to the prosecution’s case, Morris secured his home and left. He subsequently returned about two hours later and noticed the southern window of his bottom flat opened. He proceeded to peep through the window and allegedly saw Watson inside.

The homeowner rushed inside and raised an alarm, after which Watson allegedly jumped through the window and escaped with a black, bulky bag. After running with the big bag proved counterproductive, he dropped it on the road and escaped. The matter was reported to the police and Watson was subsequently arrested and charged.

The prosecution stated that while the bag was recovered, another one was still missing that contained a $250,000 laptop.

Watson was placed on $200,000 bail by Magistrate Singh, who set the next hearing for November 18.
