City mulls open air shopping centre at Bourda

The Mayor and City Council is mulling transforming the usually busy and traffic-congested commercial Bourda block into a designated open air shopping centre.

In the statement issued by the M&CC on Monday, Town Clerk Royston King said that while the idea is still young in its conception, continuous drainage and desilting work is ongoing in the Bourda/ Lacytown area and should be completed soon. Cleaning will also be done by the M&CC through Bourda Street to Cummings Street, North Road to South Road and sections of the Merriman Mall.

While this is ongoing, the council has found that it could be ideal to close the roads to vehicular traffic and allow for commercial activities only.

“We are still at the conception stage, but we are thinking about closing off the road to vehicular traffic and organize it so commercial activities will be allowed and people can come in by foot and walk through the block to get their various shopping needs,” King explained.

The cleaning and clearing includes the removal of overgrown bushes, weeds, debris and garbage from the neglected         and abandoned Bourda Cemetery as well as drains and gutters around the Public Buildings and those leading to Hadfield Street.

The recently launched Green Georgetown Vol-unteer Corps has been making significant strides in the cleaning and clearing the city.

Along with council workers, the organization has cleaned Regent, Robb and Water Streets, while heavy equipment was brought in later to complete desilting and drainage works.
