Cops accused of taking $30,000 bribe to ignore overtaking offence

Two police constables attached to the Sparendaam Police Station found themselves before a city court yesterday accused of accepting a $30,000 bribe to ignore a minor traffic offence.

Marvin Thomas, 24, and Fitzroy Nicholson, 30, were charged with corruptly obtaining $30,000 from Nazeer Khan in return for them not pursuing charges against the man, who overtook another vehicle on double solid yellow lines.

Both officers, who were represented by attorney Patrice Henry, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Henry, in his bail application, told the court that his clients had been very cooperative during the course of the investigation and were reporting regularly to the Criminal Investi-gative Department. Deniro Jones, the case prosecutor, had no objections to the attorney’s bail request.

A further request was made by Henry to have the matter transferred to Sparendaam for trial.

Magistrate Ann McLennan granted the constables $20,000 bail each and transferred the matter to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where the case will be called on October 7.
