A monumental clash will highlight the start of the fifth round of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League when point’s leader Pele opposes third-placed Slingerz FC today at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground from 6pm.
Entering the matchup on the back of a 3-1 win over Buxton United, Pele will attempt to maintain their position at the summit of the standings and will look to their formidable attacking trident of Gregory Richardson, Travis Grant and Deon Alfred to secure their first win over their foes.
Pele head coach Justin Bentick in an invited comment told Stabroek Sport: “Every game is important but the Slingerz game is going to be the toughest. One of the reasons is because they are playing well and not conceding so what we have to do is break the seal, score goals and show that they could be beaten.
“We are going out there to play good football, we are a team that is improving, scoring goals and playing more relaxed. We have also showed that we can play from behind. We have to put pressure on them, score early and defend throughout the rest of the game,” he added.
On the other hand, the Vergenoegen unit will attempt to build on their recent success after defeating Monedderlust 3-0 in their earlier engagement.
Yet to concede since the inception of the event and knowing that a win could secure the top spot in the standings, the star-studded line up of Vurlon Mills, Colin Nelson, Joshua Browne, Dwain Jacobs and Domini Garnette will attempt to send a statement to the rest of the contenders when the opening whistle sounds.
“We are going to approach the game the same way, be aggressive, look to dominate possession and try to convert the goals which we are missing. We also have to continue to play solid defensively, it is an important aspect because once you don’t concede, you can’t lose,” Slingerz head coach Joseph Wilson told Stabroek Sport.
