I have a question for the National Commemorative Commission tasked with planning and executing the national events in honour of our 50th Independence Anniversary and that is do we really, really and absolutely need year-long celebrations to mark this occasion?
After all we keep hearing the national coffers are bare. Can we really support and sustain celebrations and activities of this duration?
Singapore, much wealthier, more advanced and much more developed than we observed its 50th Independence Anniversary recently but there are no year-long celebrations. Closer to home Trinidad and Tobago also more developed and financially stable, observed its 50th Anniversary of Independence but there were no year-long celebrations. What makes us different?
I would suggest that the month of May be designated Celebration Month and some activities commence pre-May concluding 31st May 2016.
Perhaps NCC may need to rethink this decision.
