Fruta in disappointing 2-2 draw despite ‘goal of tourney’

A 90th-minute Romario Welcome strike earned Georgetown Football Club (GFC) a come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Fruta Conquerors when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League continued on Wednesday.

With the score locked at 2-1 going into the final moments, Welcome upon collecting a left-sided pass at the top of the box, lobbed his effort into the top right-hand corner past the outstretched hand of custodian Alex Murray, sending their large support staff into a frenzy.

As a result of the draw, GFC moves to five points but remains in the seventh position. On the other hand, the disappointing tourney for the Tucville side continued as they move to eight points and remain in the fourth position.

The fixture started brightly for the visitors as they snatched the lead in the ninth minute through a Kwame LaFleur effort, finishing down the centre of the goal after collecting a perfectly placed flat left- sided cross from Trevon Lythcott within the centre of the six-yard area.

It then became 2-0 in the 26th minute in the most fortuitous manner as Rafael Edwards scored arguably the goal of the tourney.

Standing in the centre of his own half approximately 70 yards from goal, Edwards in his attempt to thwart a lobbed pass, cleared the ball into the heavens, only to see it sail over the head of the keeper and into the right-hand corner, stunning the entire viewership.

Despite the bright start, complacency began to creep into the mindset of the Tucville side as GFC pulled one back in the 34th minute through a well-placed Curtis Kellman free kick from the top of the box into the roof of the left-hand corner.

The resumption of the second stanza saw the home side almost equalizing as Michael Henry was denied in the 49th minute by the onrushing custodian within the left side of the box, racing off his line to thwart the danger.

Mikhail Stewart then wasted a great chance to pull even one minute later, blasting his shot wide of the left-hand corner from the centre of the box, after collecting a left-sided pass unchallenged.

On the back foot after the resumption of the second half, the Tucville side almost added to their tally in the 73rd minute as Alleyne upon skipping past his marker on the touchline within the left side of the box, saw his right-footed effort denied by the keeper.

Similarly, Jermin Junior fluffed a perfect opportunity to make it 3-1 in the 80th minute, racing onto a through pass within the right side of the box, only to fire his effort into the advancing keeper instead of passing the ball to the waiting Alleyne within the centre of the box.

On the other side, the hosts should have grabbed the equaliser seven minutes later as Kelsey Benjamin was denied by the onrushing Murray within the centre of the box, after racing onto the ball between the two defenders.

The visitors would eventually pay for their profligacy in front of goal as Welcome snatched a deserved late equaliser for the hosts. The opening matchup of the night witnessed Pele FC defeating Monedderlust FC by a 3-0 score to ascend to the top of the point standings.
