Labourer jailed for escaping from police station

Daniel Baird, a St Ignatius labourer who escaped police custody five months ago while being on remand for other charges, was yesterday sentenced to five months in prison after pleading guilty to the crime.

Baird, 22, admitted to escaping from the Lethem Police Station, located in Central Rupununi, on May 17. Baird was on remand for charges of breaking and entering and larceny at the time.

The facts provided to the court by the prosecution stated that Baird had made a request to use the washroom but escaped when the door to the lock-ups were opened by pushing the door against the constable, who fell.

It was reported that Baird made his way over to Brazil and was not seen again until October 15, when police on patrol spotted him on a public road in Lethem.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan sentenced Baird to five months in prison for the charge of escaping custody. No details were provided concerning the previous charges of breaking and entering and larceny.
