Fraud accused immigration officer gets bail

A police officer was yesterday charged with fraud after being accused of knowingly making a false entry in the border entry management system.

Yonnick Smith of 457 Block ‘A,’ Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

It was alleged that on May 17th, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Smith, while being employed in the capacity of clerb1

k at the Guyana Police Force Immigration Department, knowingly made a false entry in the border entry management system.

Smith, who has eight years of service in the Immigration Department, was transferred to Tactical Services Unit (TSU) during the investigation. The husband and father of one has been placed on $100,000 bail and is expected to appear back in court on December 14th for statements.
