Motie’s six-for helps blow away Leewards Hurricanes for 85

Spinner Gudakesh Motie’s six wickets helped blow away the Leewards Hurricanes for a first innings 85 but the visitors were steady in their second innings at 215-3, trailing the Guyana Jaguars by 119-runs heading into the final day of round two of the WICB/PCL Regional 4-Day competition played at Providence, Guyana.

The Guyana Jaguars maintained enforced the follow-on after the Hurricanes failed in their pursuit of the Jags first innings 419. At stumps, Leewards looked better batting a second time but have lost three key wickets.

The ex-West Indies Under-19 left-arm spinner Motie, took a career-best 6-20, slicing through the Hurricanes who imploded in their first innings.

Batting a second time the Hurricane’s saw Chris Barnwell (1-38) who picked up 2-5 in the first innings, removing opener Sherwin Peters for 39 while pacer Ronsford Beaton (1-21) bowled Shane Jeffers for 31.

Daron Cruickshank, who stroked nine fours in an attractive 57 fell to Motie who picked up his seventh wicket of the match, leaving Bonner and Peters to do the repair job with one day of play left.

It was a good second innings batting outing for the Leewards top-order batsmen who were poor in their first innings, playing irresponsible shots against the Guyanese bowlers who utilized the familiar conditions to their advantage.

Earlier, Motie and Barnwell, who knocked over the Hurricanes top four batsmen minutes before stumps on day two resumed their first innings hunt for the remaining batters who fell before lunch. Motie dismissed Bonner (00), Orlando Peters (00), Rakeem Cornwall (07), Jason Peters (11) along with Jacques Taylor and Gavin Tonge who failed to score.

Top-scorers, skipper Steve Liburd (23) and Sherwin Peters (28), were the two overnight batters who sought to defy the Jags but were hunted by Beaton (2-29) who bowled well during his spell.

The final day of play commences at 9:30hrs.
