Hikers win division one hockey competition

Hikers, Georgetown Cric-ket Club (GCC) Panthers and Old Fort secured titles in the first, ladies and second divisions respectively when the Guyana Telep-hone & Telegraph (GT&T) company National Indoor Championships concluded on Sunday.

Hosted at the National Gymnasium at Mandela Avenue, Hikers defeated GCC in the first division finale by a 7-5 score line. Eventual section most valuable player (MVP), Shane Samuels netted a helmet-trick while Jamarj Assanah, Robert France and Devin Munroe scored in the 11th, 12th and 39th minutes each.

For the loser, Dwayne Scott recorded a brace in the 13th and 26th minutes while Orland Semple, Devin Spencer and Devin Hooper netted solo conversions in the seventh, 18th and 28th minutes correspondingly.

The ladies final witnessed GCC Panthers clawing their way past GCC Tigers by a 4-3 margin. Shebiki Baptiste recorded a helmet-trick for Panthers while Sonia Jardine netted a hat-trick in a losing cause.

In the second division finale, Old Fort defeated Hikers by a 2-1 margin. Jason Clarke and Jael Gaskin scored for the winner in the 26th and 28thminutes respectively while Rayon Branford initially gave Hikers the lead.

In individual section of the presentation ceremony, the most promising male player was Omar Hopkinson while Minsodia Culpepper won the female equivalent of the trophy.

In the second division individual awards, Michael Hing was adjudged the most promising goalkeeper while Gaskin was the adjudged the MVP. In the ladies section, Sarafina Phillips was presented with the most promising goalkeeper award while Baptiste was the MVP.

In the men’s first division, Medroy Scotland copped the most promising goalkeeper while Samuels was the MVP.
