Accused drug trafficker refused bail

Mark Sauers, who is accused of conspiring with another man to traffic over 15 kilos of cocaine at Beterverwagting, on the East Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison yesterday by a city magistrate.

The charge against Sauers, also known as Marco, 36, of 11th Street, Paradise Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, is that he conspired with Jermaine Lowe to traffic 15.308 kilogrammes of cocaine.

He was not required to plead to the charge.

Sauers’ lawyer requested bail for him, while noting that her client is fearful of going to prison since he has been receiving threats from prisoners. The lawyer also asked that the court take into consideration that Sauers has Sickle Cell disease and would require medical attention. She added that he would be willing to subject himself to any conditions set by the court for bail.

However, the prosecution objected to bail, while saying that the circumstances described by the defence were not enough to be considered special reasons for bail. The court also heard that Sauers has a similar matter pending at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

The prosecutor noted too that the accused is very familiar with the prosecution’s main witness in the matter and signaled that there could be interference if Sauers were released.

After hearing the submissions, Magistrate Judy Latchman ordered that Sauers be remanded to prison until December 7th, when the next hearing is scheduled.
