Cops to seek advice on charges after Coverden bar shooting

Police will seek advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on possible charges stemming from the shooting at a Coverden, East Bank Demerara sports bar last Saturday, which occurred after a scuffle between a patron and a policeman who was trying to make an arrest.

According to Commander of ‘A’ Division Clifton Hicken, the matter is being dealt with by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), which was expected to send the files to the DPP yesterday.

Linden Samuels, 33, a customer, was involved in the scuffle with a policeman who was attempting to make an arrest at the bar when the gun was fired, hitting Samuels and Odessa Glasgow, 27, a waitress at the Sports Bar.

At the time policeman was responding to a report of disorderly behaviour at the bar.

Police had said that Samuels was attempting to disarm the policeman when a round was discharged and struck him and Glasgow.

Samuels, however, had told Stabroek News that he was only trying to shift the policeman’s gun, which was pointed to his head, when he was shot.
