Man remanded, teenage co-accused on bail over attempted theft of motors

A man was remanded to prison while his teenage co-accused was granted bail after they were both charged with trying to steal motors yesterday.

The allegation against Joseph Emmanuel, 22, and Lyron Williams, 18, is that on February 2, at the Upper Demerara River, they attempted to steal two motors for an auto-rickshaw from Ramnarine Jettoo.

Both men pleaded not guilty when Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry read the charge at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.

Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to bail for Emmanuel. He told the court Emmanuel was charged with possession of firearms and ammunition and the matters are currently pending in Berbice. Williams was never charged before and Mangru did not object bail for the teen.

The magistrate then set bail for Williams at $100,000, while she remanded Emmanuel to prison. The case is to be called again at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on February 10th.
