Destitute man left paralysed after being run over by SUV

An indigent man is now paralysed in the Georgetown Hospital after he was struck by a vehicle five months ago while was asleep on a section of city pavement.

William Goodasaul, 45, is very eager to walk again and remains hopeful. The man told Stabroek News that he was a labourer and left his Lot 6, Rose Mary Lane, Tiger Bay residence and started sleeping on the pavement.

On an early morning last November, a large SUV crashed into him while he was asleep, bracing him up against a wall after it veered off the roadway then simply backed-up and drove off. Goodasaul said doctors have told him that he has sustained a spinal injury but he believes that his legs have been “slipped out of position” and that a second evaluation would reveal a less serious diagnosis.

However, the man said so far his pleas for a second opinion have fallen on deaf ears but he is hopeful that someone would assist him. “I don’t know if is because me is a poor man or wa…but non a the doctor them or nobody na want listen to wa me saying,” Goodasaul said.

To date, no one has been arrested in connection with the incident as Goodasaul could not identify the driver who hit him. However, he understands that a security guard witnessed the accident and believes that a thorough investigation might lead to an arrest. Goodasaul said a police rank took a statement from him when he was admitted to the hospital but since then he has not heard from the police.

Meanwhile, a relative of Goodasaul said that no report was made to the police since her uncle could not say exactly what happened.
