Person in custody over murder of Montrose woman

One person is in custody over the murder of an elderly Montrose woman on Saturday but the police say the man who inflicted the fatal blows remains on the loose.

After completing the review of surveillance footage from the house where 77-year-old Danrasie ‘Carmen’ Ganesh was murdered on Saturday,

useful information was picked up by both the relatives of the woman and the police but the prime suspect remains on the run.

Relatives, however, said they were told that a man resembling the suspect was seen lurking near the scene of the crime yesterday but he vanished before the police could be summoned.

Ganesh was beaten to death in the two-storey building for which she had been the caretaker for over forty years. After spending over two hours in the house, the killer left with a small bag containing jewellery. However, other valuables were not troubled, leading the woman’s family to believe that robbery was not the primary motive behind her murder. The killer, who was armed with a spanner, did not pay attention to the surveillance cameras, which captured every blow he dealt to the woman.

Up to late yesterday afternoon there was no information on his identity.

However, Stabroek News was told by the woman’s family that the killer’s face was captured on the surveillance camera footage, although he is not known to the police.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News yesterday that the police have completed reviewing the footage and are asking for the assistance of the public in the capturing of the man. Blanhum noted that one person is currently in police custody assisting with the investigations.

Ganesh’s daughter, Sandra, informed this newspaper yesterday that after her mother’s death the family members, including her six children, viewed the entire footage where they were able to see everything that transpired.
