Over 20 floats at this year’s Diwali motorcade

Scores of persons last night lined several city streets and along the East Coast Demerara road to witness the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s (GHDS) annual Diwali motorcade.

This year’s procession saw the participation of in excess of 20 floats depicting various scenes. Among them were the Rosignol Palmyra Shri Krishna Mandir, the Balesar Family, Bath Shri Krishna Mandir, Bushlot Vishnu Mandir, Timehri Maha Kali Mandir, East Coast Demerara Praant Nujawaan, Cornelia Ida Dharmic Vishnu Mandir, P&R Lumber Yard and Better Hope Mandir and several others.

For some spectators this year’s motorcade was better that the previous years as some of the displays brought new and exciting designs and portrayal of the meaning behind the Hindu Festival of Lights.

“Every year the motorcade displays are very vibrant but this year they brought something different with the use of new designs. And the portrayal of the stories were fantastic,” one young lady commented.

While for others, the number of groups who participated in the motorcade were less than that of last year.

Apart from the motorcade, some homes had their brightly burning diyas, in some cases augmented with fairy lights.

There was, as has been over the past few years, police presence in the environs of the Alexander Village Mandir. Observations revealed about 2 – 3 groups of police officers positioned at key points in the area maintaining peace as the religious celebrations were under way in the Mandir.
