Cops hold tint shop owner over false number plate used in Baroda bank robbery

The police yesterday arrested a tint shop owner who allegedly provided the false number plates that were placed on the car used by the gang of men who robbed the Bank of Baroda branch at Mon Repos, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said.

The man was the third person to be arrested as part of the investigation of the attack, which was carried out last Friday afternoon.

The police, in a statement on the attack, had said that four men, one of whom was armed with a gun, entered the bank and held up the lone female private security guard on duty and took away her .32 service revolver. During the attack, which lasted for about five minutes, the men held up two female tellers and took away an undisclosed amount of cash before escaping in a waiting silver grey/off white Premio bearing false registration plate PNN 8984.

This newspaper was told that on Friday morning, the men reportedly visited the tint shop, where they had the number plate prepared and fitted before they committed the robbery.

Two suspects were held separately during the period of Friday afternoon to Saturday along with the car that was used in the daring robbery.

A businessman had related to this newspaper that he saw the car used by the robbers circling the area before the robbery. He said the getaway car was driven by a fifth person.

The Mon Repos branch of the India-headquartered bank is located in the lower flat of a mini shopping mall just behind the village’s market.
