DPP advises charges against suspects in Baroda bank robbery

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) yesterday advised that charges be laid against the three suspects now in custody for the robbery of the Bank of Baroda branch at Mon Repos.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to Stabroek News that the trio, including a tint shop operator, will be charged today.

In the meantime, Blanhum said investigations are ongoing to locate other suspects that allegedly robbed the bank last Friday.

The police, in a statement on the attack, had said that four men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, entered the bank and held up the lone female private security guard on duty and took away her .32 service revolver. During the attack, which lasted for about five minutes, the men held up two female tellers and took away an undisclosed amount of cash before escaping in a waiting silver grey/off white Premio bearing false registration plate PNN 8984.

The men reportedly visited the tint shop on Friday morning to get a false number plate prepared and fitted for the robbery.

As a result, the tint shop operator was arrested on Monday. Two other suspects had already been held by then and the car that was used in the robbery was also located.

A businessman had related to this newspaper that he saw the car used by the robbers circling the area before the robbery. According to him, the getaway car was driven by a fifth person.

The Mon Repos branch of the India-headquartered bank is located in the lower flat of a mini shopping mall just behind the village’s market.
