Baby critical after chopped in head

A baby boy is in a critical condition at a city hospital, while his mother is recovering after they were chopped on Saturday evening during a domestic dispute.

Ten-month-old Omar Jones sustained a single chop wound to his head. His mother, Maria Jones who was also sustained a chop wound to her right hand was treated and sent away.

Stabroek News understands that the incident occurred around 8 pm on Saturday at Lot 70 Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara (WBD).

According to reports, the suspect, 65-year-old Geewan Sanichar who had accused Jones of being unfaithful to his son, armed himself with a cutlass and fired several chops at her, while she was holding her infant son in her arms. The cutlass connected with Jones’s arm and her son’s head.

The suspect was promptly arrested by the police and is currently in custody, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed.

Sanichar was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
