Bandits break into De Willem store owner’s minibus, grab $500,000

The owner of Kumar’s Variety Store of 69 De Willem, West Coast Demerara was yesterday robbed of $500,000 after leaving the Citizens Bank at Parika, East Bank Essequibo around mid-day.

Nandkumar Bahadur told Stabroek News that he went to the bank to change the money into notes of $1,000, $500 and $100.

On his way back, he stopped at Good Hope, parked his bus, and went to purchase beef on the opposite side of the road.

As he was waiting for the beef, he said, a white Toyota Spacio motorcar stopped suddenly in front of him, blocking his view of the bus. After a while, the car sped off, but he did not realise he had been robbed until he went back across to the bus and discovered the lock broken and the bag containing the cash was gone.

He made a report to the police who are currently conducting investigations.

Businesspersons in the area have footage of the incident captured by their surveillance cameras.
