De Willem businessman shot and robbed at Eccles stoplight

The police are on the hunt for two bandits who shot and robbed a West Coast Demerara (WCD) businessman of $500,000 cash and personal documents at the Eccles Public Road stoplight on Thursday.

Nandkumar Bahadur, 36, the owner of Kumar Variety Store situated at De Willem Public Road, WCD was shot in this thigh around 6 pm.

He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was admitted as a patient. His condition is listed as stable.

The robbery was reportedly carried out by two bandits on a motorcycle. One of the men was armed with a handgun. They are yet to be apprehended.

According to the police, at the time of the robbery, Bahadur was in a motor vehicle heading home. He was the driver of the vehicle and was accompanied by a porter.

The police said Bahadur related that due to the heavy traffic and the stoplight, he stopped at the Eccles Public Road.

Whilst waiting, Bahadur said the bandits appeared alongside his vehicle and the pillion rider pointed a gun inside the vehicle and demanded the money.

The bandit discharged a round which struck Bahadur in his thigh.

After he was shot, Bahadur handed over a haversack which contained the cash and documents.

The suspects made good their escape.

The matter was reported to the police and an investigation has been launched.
