Ellison Johnson, 19, who is a miner, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to the charge that he stole a magic mat, which is used for trapping gold. The mat, which was valued at $50,000, was the property of Seon David and was stolen between February 20 and February 21 at Aranka Backdam, Essequibo.

Johnson pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick objected to bail on the basis that Johnson admitted under caution to the police that he had stolen the item. He further stated that other charges are being investigated and it is likely that they may be brought against the accused.

As a result, Johnson was denied bail. He is to appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on February 26 for the assignment of the case.
