Suspect held in murder of mining camp owner

More than a month after skeletal remains, suspected to be that of mining camp owner Jeonarine Basdeo was found at Kuribrong, Mazaruni, the police yesterday apprehended a suspect.

This was confirmed by a police source, who told Stabroek News that the suspect, Ramesh Khan, 32, has since confessed to killing Basdeo due to some payments owed to him. However, the remains are yet to be confirmed as those of Basdeo through DNA comparison.

Stabroek News understands that Khan has told investigators that on January 2, he requested a quantity of gold from his employer but this was denied. As a result, a heated argument ensued between the duo during which Khan alleged that Basdeo took a piece of wood and lashed him on his hand. He said he managed to disarm Basdeo and inflicted two blows to his head. The man subsequently collapsed and Khan went into the camp and removed some 12 pennyweight in gold before fleeing on an ATV motor cycle.

He reportedly went to his Berbice home and only returned to the interior yesterday, when he was apprehended by the police.
