Soil removed from road shoulder should be used on sea defence

Dear Editor,

Over the past few days I have observed work being executed along the shoulders of the Liliendaal-Turkeyen public road. I’ve also noticed comments in the media attributed to the Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson pledging to make the roadways safer, and it is in this light that I commend this initiative.

However, my concern with regard to this particular project hinges on the fact that the soil is being removed along the shoulder of the road and taken somewhere else. Why not take this very soil and use it to shore up the sea defence right there as this particular area has been experiencing erosion ever since the above average high tides a few years ago?

With every overtopping, the integrity of this dam on which the concrete structure was built, is tested. The fault lines or areas where erosion continues are clearly visible.

Let’s not wait until the situation reaches a critical stage and we have to award another contract, this time to transport soil back to this location.

Yours faithfully,
Romel Roopnarine
